DIY: RESTORE A RUSTY OLD LAMP BASE

A rusty old lamp base goes from shabby chic to old-world glam using an easy-to-master antiquing effect courtesy of paint-effects artist Taryn-Lee.

YOU NEED

Paint: Plascon Velvaglo Waterbased in Ocean Frigate (B6-E1-4) and Plascon Paint Effects in Silver (Met 2).

Other: Fine-grained sandpaper, Polycell EndRust rust converter and primer, artist’s oil paint in raw umber diluted with a drop of turpentine, a 25 mm paintbrush and mutton cloth.

TIME NEEDED

One day.

THE PREP

Lightly sand the lamp base with sandpaper and wipe off the dust using a damp cloth.

Step 1: Apply EndRust using a brush, roller or airless spray to allow maximum penetration. After it has reacted, rinse off any material that has not turned blueish-black.

Step 2: Apply one coat of Ocean Frigate and allow it to dry completely.

Step 3: Apply two coats of Metallic Silver, allowing the first coat to dry before applying the second.

Step 4: Apply diluted raw umber artist oil colour and wipe off using a cloth.
